ASIA DESIGN RELATIONS: NEIGHBOURING DESIGN COMMUNITIES

In 2022, the DesignArt Tokyo organising team invited Suzy to be the guest curator for the central showcase of DesignArt Tokyo 2023.

Responding to the sponsor’s theme of “future living,” Suzy began by surveying the work of designers from countries neighbouring Japan. As common threads and shared concerns began to emerge, the curation naturally took shape around four thematic “chapters”: Biomorphism, Future Traditions, New Belle Époque, and Upcycled. These were presented under the overarching title: A New Horizon: A Showcase of Contemporary Work from East Asia.

From a longlist of over 550 designers, 20 were ultimately selected from Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. The final exhibition featured 45 pieces and was on view for the full 10-day duration of DesignArt Tokyo.
